Maria van Kerkhove

Bio

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove is the Acting Director of the Department of Epidemic and Pandemic Prevention and Preparedness as well as the COVID-19 Technical Lead of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Head of the Emerging Diseases and Zoonoses Unit in the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme.
Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove's work focused on zoonotic, respiratory and emerging/re-emerging diseases such as avian influenza, MERS, SARS, COVID-19, Ebola, Marburg, plague and Zika. Her research has focused on understanding and mitigating factors that are associated with transmission of zoonotic pathogens between animals and humans, the epidemiology of zoonotic pathogens, and ensuring that scientific research and field experiences directly inform public health policies for action.
